Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Mali in Group E enroute to Qatar WC

Kenya’s Harambee Stars will have a fair test in their quest to qualify for the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup, having pooled against Uganda, Rwanda and Mali in Group E.

In a draw conducted in Cairo, Egypt on Tuesday evening, Kenya, who were in third pool of teams according ti FIFA rankings, avoided some of the African powerhouses such as 2019 African Cup of Nations champions Algeria, Senegal, Nigeria and Ghana among others, who were in pool A of the Confederation of African Football(CAF) classification.

Other CECAFA members Tanzania are in Group J, against Benin, Madagascar and Dr. Congo, while Ethiopia are in Group G with four-time winners Ghana, Zimbabwe and South Africa.

Another CECAFA member Sudan will cross swords with North African giants Morocco, and West African sides Guinea and Guinea Bissau in Group I.

The journey started off with a first round of 28 teams, (ranked 27–54) playing home-and-away over two legs. The 14 winners advanced to the second round.

The second round of 40 teams (ranked 1–26 and 14 first-round winners) is what has been divided into 10 groups of four teams to play home-and-away round-robin matches. The group winners advance to the third round.

The third round of the 10 second round group winners will play home-and-away over two legs, with the five winners qualifying for the biggest football fiesta on the globe.

Thus, Kenya will have to fight a one more battle even if the Francis Kimanzi coached Harambee Stars tops the relatively fair looking Group E.
